Recording mosquitoes, protecting human health and animal health:
I am delighted to see that since my initial involvement through our initiatitve “The Three Mosquiteers” at the Global Mosquito Alert Consortium back in 2017 (https://www.wilsoncenter.org/publication/global-mosquito-alert-building-citizen-science-capacity-for-surveillance-and-control) there have been significant advances in citizen science and mosquito surveying. The Mosquito Alert app is now running at a pan- European level and I am honoured to be one of the Expert Validators for Mosquito Alert. Citizens contribution is crucial for the early detection of new invasive mosquitoes and for understanding the distribution of already established Aedes invasive mosquitoes. In our group we work together with citizens and schools in order to record mosquitoes and it is fantastic to see the enthusiasm of the younger generations regarding using technologies for recording biodiversity including insects of medical and veterinary importance.
Mosquito Alert is an application for smart phones how give to citizens the opportunity to inform the sciences about mosquitoes distribution and any invasive mosquito. You can download this app on IOS and Android.
