We are based at the South Eastern corner of Europe, the Akrotiri Peninsula, Cyprus. We engage in research, vector management and raising awareness about issues related to native and non-native vector ecology, biological control and insect conservation. We are strong advocates of the One Health approach.
We work in Cyprus and beyond with many wonderful international friends, collaborators and citizens. We are very lucky to be based at such a unique area of the world. Akrotiri is the largest wetland complex system in Cyprus with numerous internationally important saline and freshwater habitats, including salt marshes, permanent and seasonal saline lagoons, sand flats, freshwater and saline reed beds and freshwater marshes. The Akrotiri wetland supports an appreciable number of rare, vulnerable or endangered species or subspecies of plants or animals of the Eastern Mediterranean biogeographic region, but is also a mosquito biodiversity hotspot. A great amount of our work is dedicated on understanding the mosquito ecology and apply area wide mosquito management approaches. We are using a holistic approach and try to study the role of mosquitoes in relation to biocontrol agents, beneficial species and invasive organisms introduced around the peninsula.
