Aphanius fasciatus is a small fish endemic to the Mediterranean region known as a good biocontrol agent of mosquito larvae. It is commonly known also as Mediterranean killifish or Zambarola.
Our team is trying to understand its population dynamics in space and time around the Akrotiri Peninsula in relation to Gambusia holbrookia non-native species that was released in Cyprus from the US in several aquatic habitats in order to control mosquito larvae. Gambusia holbrooki has been characterised since as one of the most invasive fish in Europeand and it should no longer be released. Around the Akrotiri peninsula we monitor both fish species the native Aphanius fasciatus and the non-native Gambusia holbrooki.
